Invisalign is the nearly invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth, without metal or wires. This treatment uses sophisticated 3-D computer imaging technology to depict the complete Invisalign treatment plan from the initial position to the final desired position from which, with your approval, a series of custom-made, clear Invisalign braces are produced. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for one to two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.
Invisalign Express (formerly i7) is suitable for the simpler cases requiring up to 7 aligners, Invisalign Lite can be used for mild cases requiring up to 14 aligners while with Invisalign Comprehensive (formerly Full), which is aimed at more complex cases, an unlimited number of aligners can be used. Invisalign is almost invisible: You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. Invisalign overcomes the aesthetic concerns many adults and teenagers have with braces.
Invisalign is more comfortable: Custom made; aligners are tailored made to match your teeth exactly. Making the aligners more comfortable and reducing irritation. There are no metal brackets or wires as with normal braces to cause mouth irritation. When starting a new aligner, there may be temporary minor discomfort- a feeling of pressure- as the teeth start to move.
Invisalign is removable: Whilst each aligner should be worn about 22 hrs per day, unlike normal braces, you can remove them to eat and drink what you want during Invisalign treatment. You can also remove them to brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene.
Visualisation: Invisalign allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan- the ClinCheck – before you start so you can see how your straight teeth look when your treatment is complete.-
Invisalign aligners move teeth with an appropriate placement of controlled force on the teeth. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign not only controls the amount of movement per aligner, but also the timing of the movement. So, at each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move, as per the Invisalign treatment plan for that particular stage. This results in an efficient force delivery system that moves teeth into the desired prescribed position.
To aid the movement of teeth, sometimes it is necessary to add “attachments” to teeth which are small specifically shaped pieces of tooth coloured filling material. These allow the Invisalign aligner to move the teeth in the most optimal way. They will then be removed at the end of the treatment.
If teeth are crowded, it is often necessary to create space to allow the alignment to occur. Sometimes existing spaces can be utilized, very occasionally extractions may be necessary but often space is created by removing very small amounts of enamel from the side surfaces of teeth, a procedure known as IPR (interproximal reduction). This is a well-established technique which when used diligently does not adversely affect the health of the teeth.
Like any orthodontic dental treatment, retainers are necessary after treatment to keep the teeth stable in their new positions. There are often different options available which we would be happy to discuss with you.
