Bonding

Bonding is the term used by dentists when a tooth coloured composite filling material is placed, or ‘bonded’ onto the tooth surface, to alter the shape or contour of the existing tooth. This versatile technique is excellent to restore a small chip or defect on a tooth, to close an unsightly gap between two teeth or repair broken teeth damaged due to trauma. Done carefully bonding can often merge imperceptibly into the tooth structure. It is probably one of the most conservative of all cosmetic dental treatments practiced today. That is because tooth bonding involves minimal alteration to the original tooth enamel, is essentially reversible if none of the enamel is removed, and the results are seen immediately. It is particularly useful for younger patients. Bonding can also be used to change the shape of one tooth type to look like another and at its extreme, whole veneers can be made out of bonded composite.
