Mouth cancer is a malignant growth which can occur in any part of the mouth, including the lips, cheeks, tongue and throat. The most common presentation is of an ulcer which does not heal within a couple of weeks though other presentations such as changes in sensation, red/white patches or even swellings are not unusual. It is important though to realise that not all swellings are malignant…most are caused by dental abscesses. It is important to visit your dentist at once if you notice any abnormalities, or are not sure. Regular dental examinations allow early detection of abnormalities and prompt treatment.
